Policy approval and ownership

Prior endorsement of the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee is required for the development of a new policy or to make significant changes to an existing policy.

Policies are approved by either Senate or the Vice-Chancellor and President, depending on their categorisation as described below:

Governance policies – approved by Senate.

Academic policies – unless reserved by Senate, approved by the Vice-Chancellor and President based on advice and recommendations from the relevant member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee, and after considering any advice from the Academic Board.

Operational policies – unless reserved by Senate, approved by the Vice-Chancellor and President based on advice and recommendations from the relevant member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee.

The person accountable for achieving the objectives of the policy is the owner of the policy (e.g. finance policies are owned by the Chief Financial Officer).

Procedures

Unless approval has been reserved by the Vice-Chancellor and President:

  • Academic procedures are approved by the relevant member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee after considering any advice from the Academic Board or its subcommittees.
  • Operational procedures are approved by the owner of the parent policy.

UQ’s policy approval process details the workflow and appropriate approval authorities for drafting new and amending existing policies and procedures.

For requests to publish changes in the PPL, please contact the Enterprise Governance team with the relevant document number and name, and approval from the policy owner.
