Under the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) there are two review mechanisms:

  • internal review, conducted by UQ
  • external review, conducted by the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC). Under the RTI Act an external review can be carried out without having to complete an internal review.

Internal review

If the University receives an application for internal review of an original decision made under the RTI Act, a delegated officer (not less senior than the original decision-maker) will review the decision and either affirm or vary the decision.

All internal review applications must be made in writing and:

  • emailed to rti@uq.edu.au; or

  • mailed to:
    Right to Information Office
Level 4, JD Story Building (Building 61)
    The University of Queensland
    St Lucia QLD 4072

Your application must:

  • state the grounds for review (e.g. objecting to a document being exempt from disclosure)
  • be lodged within 20 business days after the date of the written notice of the decision.

External review

If you are not satisfied with the outcome of a decision (including an internal review decision), you may apply to the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) for external review of the decision.

All inquiries regarding making an application for external review should be directed to the OIC.
